The territory of Mereto was inhabited since prehistory: a ‘castelliere’ is still visible at Savalons, remains of a protohistoric burial mound (the so-called ‘Tumbare’) stands near Tomba, and Roman and early medieval settlements were found at Mereto. The rural past of the area has left traces in many buildings by the typical architecture: with this regard, particularly interesting is the Mulin di Marchet complex. On the other hand, the parish church dedicated to S. Michele in Mereto, contains statues by Giuseppe Torretti, one of the greatest Baroque sculptors, and paintings by Giuseppe Buzzi from San Daniele. In the church of S. Michele at Tomba are 1572 frescoes by Giulio Urbanis, whereas the church of S. Marco del Friuli, a stylistic complex of rare coherence, is among the masterpieces of early 20th-century art in Friuli, where artists as Girolamo and Raimondo D’Aronco, Luigi De Paoli, Leonardo Rigo, Alberto Calligaris left their marks.
