Afully equipped ski resort, Forni di Sopra is one of most frequented tourist resorts in Carnia, thanks also to its favourable position at the foot of the Carnia Dolomites. As the nearby Forni di Sotto, it has Roman origins. Included in the Aquileia Patriarchate at the end of the 11th century, it was then ceded to the Savorgnan household in 1326, hence the name of Forni Savorgnani for both towns. Renown for the innate spirit of cooperation of its citizens (which led, among other things, to the creation of the Latteria Sociale, Istituto di Credito, and cooperative warehouse), Forni di Sopra boasts remarkable examples of rural architecture, the most significant of which is Casa Giordan in the neighbourhood of Vico, a large building partly stone, partly wooden, including bothhouse and hayloft. The artistic collections in churches is remarkable: the parish church has a large 17th-century wooden altar by carver Girolamo Comuzzo from Gemona with a 15th-century altarpiece carved, painted and gilded by Domenico da Tolmezzo, representing one of the few works by the most distinguished 15th-century wooden sculptor remaining after the recent thefts in Zuglio and Illegio: within an almost Gothic frame by the exuberant decoration, ten niches house ten almost full-scale statues. The choir of the nearby small church of S. Floriano shows good frescoes with Saints and Doctors of the Church by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo (ca. 1504) and a lovely altarpiece by the vivid colours (and tricuspid frame) painted by Andrea Bellunello nel 1480: the elegant figure of S. Floriano in the middle is reminiscent of Venetian painting of the time. The mountain enthusiasts will enjoy a pleasant walk in the surrounding woods or in the Carnia Dolomites along the CAI 346 path to reach Rifugio Giaf.
